3LPE Coating Pipe
A 3LPE coated pipe is a steel pipe with a three-layer external coating for enhanced corrosion and mechanical protection, commonly used in oil, gas, and water pipelines. The three layers are an inner fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) primer, a copolymer adhesive in the middle, and an outer high-density polyethylene (HDPE) layer.

Standards & Specifications
- ISO 21809-1 – International specification for 3LPE/3LPP coatings.
- DIN 30670 – Widely adopted in Europe and Asia, specifying thickness ranges and testing methods.
- Other Specs: NACE, company DEPs, and project-specific standards available on request.
- Pipe Range: 4″ – 60″ (customizable)
- Coating Thickness: 1.8 mm – 3.7 mm depending on OD and standard
- Applications: Onshore, offshore, swamp, and HDD crossings
Key benefits
Corrosion resistance
The FBE layer provides excellent protection against corrosion, while the entire system resists cathodic disbondment.
Mechanical protection
The outer polyethylene layer protects the pipe from abrasion and impact during transportation and installation.
Durability
The combination of layers creates a durable coating that extends the lifespan of the pipeline.
Versatility
The 3LPE coating can be applied to various types of steel pipes, including seamless, welded, and alloy steel pipes.
Advantages of 3LPE Coating Pipes
Durable Lifetime
3LPE coated steel pipe has a service life for above 50 years. It is because 3LPE coating has good stability and anti-aging performances, which works under normal temperature and pressure conditions.
Corrosion Resistance
The elements of PE structure stability are high. So, we can use it to prevent corrosion from natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, artificial gas, and other chemical subjects. And it needs no secondary anti-corrosion equipment. The chemical of soil does not produce any effects on the steel pipe using 3LPE coating.
Flexibility
3LPE coating is a kind of soft and flexible material, it breaks after prolong 5 times longer. It is easy to bend without damage. 3PE coating steel pipe can bypass steel pipe and reduce the fees of installation.
Safe and reliable connection way
3LPE coating steel pipe mainly uses hot melt and fused connection, which connects the interface and pipeline as a whole. There is no water and gas leakage in this coated steel pipe.
Light and easy to move
3LPE Coated pipe is light in weight. It only accounts 1/8 weight of steel pipe. Because of its characteristics of softness and corrosion resistant properties, it is easy to move, and easy to bend. Welding process of this pipe coating is convenient and fast.
Layer 1: Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) Primer: This inner layer fuses directly with the steel pipe surface and provides the primary anti-corrosion barrier.
Layer 2: Copolymer Adhesive: This middle layer chemically bonds the FBE primer to the outer polyethylene layer, creating a strong, cohesive coating system.
Layer 3: Polyethylene (PE) Topcoat: The outermost layer is a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) layer that provides tough, durable protection against mechanical damage, abrasion, and other environmental factors.

Preheat:
Pre-Heating Treatment Heats the Steel Pipe to 55~85℃ to Remove the Impurities on the Surface of the Steel Pipe.
Blast Clean:
Remove Surface Impurities and Oil Contamination.
Grind Surface Defects:
Carry out Detailed Appearance Inspection to Ensure That the Steel Pipe Has No Serious Mechanical Damage, Heavy Skin, Cracks and Other Defects.
Final Surface Treatment:
Use Shot Blasting Equipment to Further Treat the Outer Surface of the Steel Pipe to Reach Sa2.5 Grade.
Induction Heat:
Pre-Heating Treatment Is Carried out to Heat the Steel Pipe to Between 185~235°c to Ensure Good Adhesion Between the Coating and the Surface of the Steel Pipe.
FBE Application:
Spraying of Epoxy Powder. The Epoxy Powder Is Evenly Covered on the Surface of the Steel Pipe by Electrostatic Spraying to Form a Tough Anti-Corrosion Layer.
Extruded or Spray Applied Copolymer:
During the Gelling Process of the Epoxy Powder Layer, An Adhesive Is Applied to Prepare for the Next Step of Winding the Polyethylene Tape.
Extruded Polyethylene:
The Polyethylene Tape Is Wound to Form a Continuous Anti-Corrosion Layer.
Quench:
After the Anticorrosion Layer Is Applied, The Pipe Is Cooled with Circulating Water to Ensure That the Anticorrosion Layer Is Fully Cured and Has Stable Properties.
Electrical Inspection:
The Edm Test Is Carried out to Check the Quality, Including Thickness, Adhesion, and Other Tests.
Stockpile:
The Completed Anti-Corrosion Treated Steel Pipe Is Properly Packaged to Prevent Damage During Transportation and Stored in an Appropriate Environment.
