Product Introduction

Steel coil is a primary flat steel product used as the starting material for steel plates, pipes, structural components, appliances, and general fabrication. Octal Pipe supplies a broad range of carbon steel coils, stainless steel coils, galvanized (GI/GL) coils, Aluzinc coils, hot rolled coils, cold rolled coils, and color-coated coils (PPGI/PPGL). Products can be supplied to recognized international standards such as ASTM, EN, JIS, and DIN, with the required grade, thickness, width, surface condition, and coating route matched to project and processing requirements.

  • Shipbuilding Coil: ASTM A131 AH36, DH36, EH36

Manufacturing Process

Steel Coil Types

Steel coils are produced by rolling slabs or billets into continuous sheets and winding them into coils. Depending on production route:

  • Hot Rolled Coil (HRC): produced above recrystallization temperature, thickness 1.2–25 mm, used for structural and pipe-making applications.
  • Cold Rolled Coil (CRC): re-rolled HRC at room temperature, thickness 0.2–3 mm, higher dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
  • Galvanized/Aluzinc Coils: HRC or CRC coated with Zn or Zn-Al alloy for corrosion protection.
  • Color Coated (PPGI/PPGL): galvanized/galvalume coil further coated with polyester, SMP, or PVDF paint layers.

Key processes include pickling – hot rolling – cold rolling – annealing – galvanizing/aluzinc bath – coating – slitting/cutting.

Manufacturing Process

The steel coil production route varies with the required thickness, surface finish, and corrosion-protection level. The main manufacturing stages are outlined below.

Step Process What Happens Main Purpose
1 Pickling Surface scale and oxide formed during hot processing are removed with acid treatment. Prepare a clean steel surface for further rolling or coating.
2 Hot Rolling Steel slabs are rolled at high temperature into continuous strip and then wound into coils. Form the base coil and achieve the required general thickness range.
3 Cold Rolling Hot rolled coil is further rolled at room temperature to reduce thickness. Improve thickness accuracy, flatness, and surface finish.
4 Annealing The cold rolled strip is heat treated under controlled conditions. Restore ductility, relieve internal stress, and improve formability.
5 Galvanizing / Aluzinc Coating The strip passes through a zinc or zinc-aluminum alloy bath. Increase corrosion resistance for outdoor or humid-service applications.
6 Color Coating A paint system such as polyester, SMP, or PVDF is applied over the coated strip. Add weather resistance, color finish, and extra surface protection.
7 Slitting / Cutting The finished coil is cut into the required width or length. Meet project-specific size and delivery requirements.
8 Inspection and Packing Thickness, width, coating, surface quality, and coil condition are checked before packing. Ensure the product matches the order and is ready for shipment.

FAQ

product-470-408

01.How do I choose between hot rolled coil and cold rolled coil?

Choose hot rolled coil for thicker gauges, structural use, and general fabrication. Choose cold rolled coil when you need tighter tolerance, smoother surface, and better dimensional consistency. Your current page places HRC at 1.2-25 mm and CRC at 0.2-3 mm, which fits mainstream mill practice.

02.How do I choose between galvanized, Aluzinc, and color-coated coil?

Use galvanized coil for zinc-based corrosion protection, Aluzinc/Galvalume for stronger long-term corrosion performance, and PPGI/PPGL when you also need painted finish and weather-exposed appearance. This follows the common substrate-to-coating logic shown in public coating references and your current page.

03.For galvanized steel coil, what coating standard should I ask for?

Do not ask only for "GI coil." Ask for the standard and coating designation, such as ASTM A653 G30, G60, or G90, because coating mass directly affects service life, price, and downstream processing.

04.Can steel coil be supplied as master coil, slit coil, or cut-to-length sheet?

Yes. Steel coil can be supplied as master coil, slit coil, or cut-to-length sheet, depending on your downstream processing route. Slit coil is more suitable for roll forming and narrow-width fabrication, while cut-to-length sheet is preferred when the project needs fixed sheet size, flatter blanks, or easier workshop handling.
