Key Features Of Drill Pipe

Drill pipe is a steel pipe with a threaded end that connects the drilling rig's surface equipment to the drilling and grinding equipment or bottom-hole assembly at the bottom of the well. Drill pipe transports drilling mud to the drill bit and, along with the drill bit, raises, lowers, or rotates the bottom-hole assembly. Drill pipe must withstand significant internal and external pressure, twisting, bending, and vibration. Drill pipe can be used multiple times during the oil and gas extraction and refining process.

Drill pipe is made from bare pipe and raw steel tubing through several processing steps. First, the outer surface of the bare pipe is bent inward, thickening the pipe wall. Next, it is threaded and plated with copper for strength. Non-destructive quality control inspection is then performed, followed by friction welding of the tool joints to the upset pipe ends. The pipe body then undergoes weld heat treatment and final weld treatment to eliminate residual weld stresses. Additional testing, including hardness testing, pressure testing, and non-destructive testing, is performed on the finished drill pipe before it is painted and packaged. The length of the drill rod is generally around nine meters.
