Valve Operation and Maintenance

1. The purpose of operation and maintenance is to extend valve life and ensure reliable opening and closing.

2. Valve stem threads frequently rub against the stem nut. Apply a small amount of yellow dry oil, molybdenum disulfide, or graphite powder for lubrication.

3. For valves that are not frequently opened and closed, periodically turn the handwheel to lubricate the stem threads to prevent seizure.

4. For outdoor valves, add a protective cover to the valve stem to protect it from rain, snow, dust, and rust.

5. If the valve is mechanically operated, lubricate the gearbox regularly.

6. Maintain the valve clean at all times.

7. Regularly inspect and maintain the integrity of other valve components. If the handwheel retaining nut is loose, replace it immediately. Do not use a makeshift replacement. Otherwise, the upper four corners of the valve stem will be rubbed, gradually losing fit and even causing failure.

8. Do not rely on the valve to support other heavy objects, and do not stand on the valve.

9. The valve stem, especially the threaded part, should be wiped frequently, and the lubricant that has been contaminated by dust should be replaced with new one, because the dust contains hard debris, which can easily wear the thread and valve stem surface and affect the service life

FAQ

info-470-408

Q1: What lubricant should be used on valve stem threads?

A1: Use a suitable dry lubricant such as molybdenum disulfide or graphite to reduce wear and prevent seizing.

Q2: How do you maintain valves that are rarely operated?

A2: Periodically cycle the valve to re-lubricate stem threads and keep the mechanism from sticking.

Q3: How can outdoor valves be protected from corrosion and contamination?

A3: Install a protective stem cover and keep the stem clean and properly lubricated.

Q4: What are the key checks in routine valve operation and maintenance?

A4: Cleanliness, stem/gearbox lubrication, secure handwheel hardware, and avoiding side loads or using the valve as a support.
